Epidemiology meet begins

KATHMANDU, June 23: At a time when different diseases, injuries, malnutrition and health problems induced by climate change have made is hard to achieve millennium development goals, Nepal has hosted a three-day conference on epidemiology with a view to finding the causes of diseases and measures to prevent and control them.



The conference also aims at implementing the conclusions reached during the South Asian Epidemiology Conference held in New Delhi on March.



Forty different experts from different countries will present working papers on different aspects of epidemiology in the conference, formulate a roadmap to implement the New Delhi Declaration, exchange experience and issue a Kathmandu Declaration with a commitment to promote epidemiology in Nepal.



Inaugurating the conference, Health Minister Umakant Chaudhary urged implementation of the programs through incident-based strategy, awareness campaign, strengthening of government health services, participatory programs and researches.



State Minister for Health Khadga Bahadur Basyal said health problems are national challenges and the government will support and promote epidemiology.



Health Secretaries Dr Sudha Sharma and Dr Pravin Mishra, WHO´s Nepal representative Dr Lin Aang, Dr GD Thakur, and Dr Chop Lal Bhusal, among others, highlighted different problems in health sector during the inaugural ceremony.
