The ministerial conference preceded civil society forum, parliamentary forum, corporate democracy forum and woman enhancing democracy from June 29-30. Nepal has been attending the ministerial conferences of the community of democracies and its affiliated programmes since 2000.[break]
Old democracies, new democracies and countries in transition had participated in the conference. Representatives from 70 countries, including US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had attended the function.
Addressing the conference, Minister Yadav stressed for appropriate plans and programmes to address the particular problems and challenges being faced by the countries in transition to democracy as well as countries emerging from conflicts and moving towards a peaceful, prosperous and stable democratic future.
Stating that the democratic transition of Nepal is an emample of people-led movement in the quest for sustainable peace and inclusive development, he highlightes Nepal’s experience of struggles for democracy and challenges the country is facing now to institutionalize and consolidate it.
Restructuring of the state from the unitary system to federal system in another equally important issue which Nepal have to tackle with great care and caution in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-lingual country, he said.
On his way to Nepal, Minister Yadav met with the Nepali community in Brussels, including the newly elected office bearers of NRNA, Belgium.
