Issuing a 15-point memorandum on the last day of the conference, the organizations working in the sector of women's rights urged the government to make the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) gender inclusive in both executive and directive committees.
Demands like organizing campaigns and special programs to help women get easy access to health services during pregnancy, menstruation and delivery phase and engaging women, Dalits and backward communities during reconstruction phase are also included in the memorandum.
Speaking at the concluding day of the two-day program, organized by various seven organizations working for women's rights in support of UN Women and IM-Swedish Development Partner, Home Minister Shakti Basnet vowed to take the memorandum to the cabinet.
“It is utmost important to provide easy services to the backward and most vulnerable communities including women during the post earthquake and reconstruction phase and I vow to take the demands raised by the women's group to the cabinet,” he said.
Likewise, addressing the program, country representative of UN Women Ziad Sheikh said the reconstruction phase after the catastrophic earthquake of April 25 is an important opportunity to bridge the existing inequality in the society.
“To address the exiting inequality, we need to ensure meaningful participation of women in various commissions and government bodies including the NRA,” he said.
Various eight organizations had formed a group to work on humanitarian response and disaster risk reduction by issuing a common charter in facilitation of UN Women right after the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake.
Around 60 women had participated from 14 earthquake affected districts in the two-day national conference and shared their experiences such as difficulties in getting their names in the relief package due to absence of any document, discrimination from the society for being disabled and lack of job opportunities in the country.
