KATHMANDU, March 6: Local authorities lifted curfew orders in Mahendranagar in Kanchanpur district and Lahan in Siraha district Friday morning, said Radio Sagarmatha.
The District Administration Office Thursday clamped a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Mahendranagar to contain a tense situation in the town. The curfew was effective through 7 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.
The far-western town has been witnessing protests for the past five days by students and other people demanding establishment of a regional university. The fresh curfew was clamped after the situation remained tense due to a clash between police and agitators throughout Thursday. Many students were injured in the clash.
Likewise, the local administration enforced indefinite curfew at Lahan in Siraha district Thursday afternoon after demonstrators intensified protests in the district headquarters. Police fired two rounds of bullets in the air and several tear-gas shells while trying to control demonstrators at Lahan chowk on Thursday afternoon.
