KATHMANDU, June 29: Over 35 participants sat for a creative writing workshop with Nepali bestselling author and professor of creative writing, Samrat Upadhyay and two American writers, Trevor Mackesey and John Thomas Howard.

‘Wordmill: Creative Writing Workshops on Fiction and Non-Fiction’ was organized by Quixote’s Cove and was held at Thames International College in Old Baneshwor on Saturday. The workshop began with an experience sharing session were Upadhyay, Mackesey and Thomas introduced themselves and their writing experiences.[break]

From sharing his tenth grade student report card when he was in St Xavier’s school in Jawalakhel to talking about those days when he was living out of two suitcases in the US, two weeks at a time from one friend’s place to the other because he couldn’t afford to pay his rent when he received rejection after rejection from publishers, Upadhyay talked about his life struggles.

“One aspect that has not really come out in the media is how poor I was at one point of time while in the US and how I’ve also struggled to be published,” said Upadhyay.

After a brief interaction with the audience where the three writers answered queries about writer’s block, originality and character development, the session then broke off to a workshop where the participants were guided by the three writers through writing prompts and interactions, on writing creative fiction.
