Cooperative fraud on rise, UML-elected Thapa arrested

KATHMANDU, Feb 2: Raj Kumar Thapa, the head of the District Coordination Committee (DCC) of Myagdi, has been arrested for allegedly embezzling the savings of a cooperative. A team from the District Police Office, Myagdi, reached the residence of DCC head Thapa on Sunday and arrested him.

Thapa and others are accused of embezzling Rs 1.5 billion from the Kumari Multipurpose Cooperative in Beni, Myagdi.

On February 11, 2023, the chairman of the cooperative, Yam Bahadur Rokka, had submitted a written application to the Cooperative Registrar Office of the Gandaki Provincial Government, demanding an investigation against Thapa.

Subsequently, an investigation report conducted by the Cooperative Registrar Office, Pokhara, concluded that Rs 1.5 billion in savings had been embezzled through Thapa's scheme.

The report stated that the group including Thapa had misused the cooperative's savings for private schools, houses and land, among other things. DCC head Thapa is an elected public representative from the UML.
