Composing an impressive resume

KATHMANDU, July 15: Writing a resume can be tricky. Especially because it is most often the first thing that represents you to a potential employer. While making one for yourself, keep in mind that a typical resume is a clear and concise summary of your education, skills and experience relevant to your career objectives or the job you are applying for.

“However, most people still can’t distinguish a resume from a curriculum vitae (CV),” states Romi Dangol, Candidate Relation Executive at merojob.com – a job portal site of Nepal which has also been providing resume-writing service since two years. [break]

According to her, a CV is a detailed list of a person’s education, work experiences, skills, trainings and achievements. “But a resume is specifically career-oriented, often summarizing experiences, qualifications and skills that relate to their career objectives and the job they’re applying for,” she clarifies. She further hints that an effective resume, depending upon the position one is applying for, should be composed well, and depending upon one’s credentials, should be between one to three pages.

In order to help you compose an impressive resume, we’ve listed out sections that a good resume usually contains. However, depending on your objective or career field, you can de-emphasize or even omit some sections mentioned below. Also, titles of the sections can be modified to describe the information presented more accurately.

Contact Information

Include your name, address (both current and permanent), telephone number, and email address. Be sure your email is professional. Hint: You might consider making a new email id if your current one is something like hardrockfan1234@yahoo.com.

Career objective

State your employment goal in a clear and concise phrase. Try to connect the objective to the job or industry you are applying for.

Education

Present your education in reverse chronological order – the most recent first. Make it easy to read, and consistent from entry to entry. Don’t forget to mention the degree, university, location, graduation date (expected graduation date in case you are still studying), and passed division or grade point average (GPA).

Work experience

List in reverse chronological order your job title, employer, work address, work performed, and dates. Use action verbs to describe your work. Highlight accomplishments and any skills developed. Whenever possible, quantify what you did (example: led a six member team, achieved Rs **** in quarterly sales). Avoid the term ‘responsibilities or duties’. They are too clichéd. Instead, use action words that emphasize results.

Honors and activities

List academic honors (scholarships, medals, etc.) or other awards you have received. Also list campus organizations (list those related to your career field first) or volunteer community groups, including any leadership positions and accomplishments. Focus on your college experiences instead of high school.

Skills

List computer and other technical skills (begin with those related to your major or the job you are applying for), languages, licenses or certifications. Include any additional special skills you have that may interest an employer.

References

‘References available upon request’ is a good way to conclude your resume if the space allows. You could actually already list two references who could testify your skills and performances related to the job you are applying for. However, do not omit relevant information about yourself in order to make this phrase fit on the page.
