Addressing a broader citizens´ assembly organized by Federation of Democratic Non-government Organization-Nepal (FEDEN-Nepal) in the capital, they said the recent row over the Army Chief was nothing but a part of Maoists´ long-term goal to establish a totalitarian regime by inducting their indoctrinated army into the national army.
“The nine-month long rule of Maoists has clearly shown that they do not observe even basic norms and values of democratic system,” said Upendra Keshari Neupane, president of Democratic Lawyers´ Association. "Things will have gone bad to worse had the Maoists not stepped down.”
Neupane said that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had insulted the President by just sending him a carbon copy of his decision to dismiss the Army Chief. “This is the biggest insult against the first President of the country,” he said.
Human rights activist Sudeep Pathak said Maoists were maintaining double standards as their speeches do not match with their actions. He alleged that Maoist chairman Dahal was lying to people. “The recently publicized video tape has not only raised questions about the number of their combatants but also their commitment to democracy,” he added.
He also criticized Maoists for chasing away innocent villagers from rural areas just because they held different opinions. “The supremacy they are advocating now is not of people, but of their own party,” he said.
On the occasion, several civil society leaders said undemocratic behaviors of the Maoists were pushing Nepal towards becoming a failed state.
Former Assistant Secretary General of United Nations Kul Chandra Gautam said political parties in Nepal were dividing citizens into progressive and regressive groups. “There is a tendency of increasing mistrust among citizens than to arouse the spirit of unity,” he said. “Why don´t we stop blaming each others and start engaging in positive things?”
He also suggested bringing ambitious development plans along with a drafting of a new constitution to bail the country out of the vicious circle of conflict.
