Gokarna Ghimire, president of Poultry Farmers´ Association, said farmers would get Rs 130 per kg for live chicken while consumers have to pay Rs 140 per kg for the same. Earlier, farmers were getting Rs 120 for a kg of live chicken.
“We decided to raise prices due to supply deficit in the capital in the last couple of weeks. Poultry farmers in and around the capital are supplying a large quantity of chicken to markets in other districts,” Ghimire said. He said farmers in the capital are supplying around 225,000 heads of chicken a day to markets in other districts that are offering high prices.
He further added that production of chicken in the capital has dropped to around 80,000 heads per day from 115,000 heads per day recorded a few weeks ago.
Average demand for chicken in the capital stands at around 85,000 heads per day.
Traders said shortage of chicks for commercial farming in the last few months has led to decline in chicken production.
“Production of chicken has dropped as farmers aren´t getting sufficient number of chicks,” he added.
Though the market is witnessing frequent fluctuation in price of chicken, price of eggs has remained unchanged at Rs 210 per crate (30 pieces) for the last four months.
