KATHMANDU, May 23: CG Mart -- a long announced convenience store chain of Chaudhary Group (CG) -- commenced operations from its first store in Min Bhawan on Wednesday.

Diwas Yonjan, manager-retail and supply chain at CG Mart, said the mart, however, has yet to begin full-fledged operation. “We had planned to start operation from mid-April. But it couldn´t materialize due to frequent strikes,” Yonjan said, adding, “CG Mart will start full-fledged operations shortly.” [break]

He also said items ordered by CG Mart have been stuck at Birgunj customs due to series of strikes over the past couple of weeks.

The store at Min Bhawan is spread over 1,000 sq ft and customers can buy items like groceries, toiletries, beverages, tobacco and liquor among others. The store also has a small sitting area where people can enjoy coffee and bakery items.

According to Yonjan, CG Mart opens from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. to cater to the needs of people with busy schedules. “In western countries, convenient stores are popular among people with busy schedules. We hope the concept will work in Nepal as the country has thousands of such people,” added Yonjan.

CG Mart plans to open stores in highly populated areas to meet daily requirements of people residing there or working nearby, said Yonjan. The store chain plans to open new outlets in Nagpokhari and Tripureshwar within a month. “In addition to that, we will be opening 10-12 outlets in the Kathmandu Valley within a year,” Yonjan said, adding that CG Mart plans to open around 300 to 400 outlet across the country within the next three years.

Outside the valley, CG Mart will expand in areas having high density of population like Pokhara, Butwal and Biratnagar, according to Yonjan.

“We are planning to appoint firms operating mini marts of small super markets as our franchisees provided that that they agree to follow rules and standards set by us,” added Yonjan.

CG Mart outlets will spread over 800-1,500 sq.ft. Chaudhary Group is investing about Rs 1 million per store, according to Yonjan.
