KATHMANDU, July 24: In an effort to lure youths to commercial agriculture, Commercial Farming Research and Development Program (CFRDP) is investing Rs 20 million in the next five years for promotion of commercial farming.

Keshab Pathak, chairman of the program, told the press on Saturday that the program has been promoting cultivation of high-value crops in different districts of Karnali to a few districts in the eastern Nepal such as Jhapa and Morang.

"We are distributing seedlings and seeds of high-value vegetables worth Rs 1.5 million to Rs 2 million this year,” said Pathak. The program is also preparing nurseries of high-value crops such as almond, cashew nut, bamboo and sandal wood.

“Our objective is to prove that farmers´ income can be improved through commercialization in agriculture rather than following traditional ways of farming,” said Pathak.

Speaking on the occasion, CA member Gagan Thapa, said commercialization in agriculture is a must for growth of agriculture sector.
