Dr. Prabhakar Pathak, Joint-secretary at the Ministry, said favourable weather condition, and adequate supply of chemical fertilizers and seeds are attributable to the increase in paddy production.

The Eastern Development Region (EDR) produced 10.13 million metric tonnes where as Western Development Region (WDR) produced 10.10 metric tonnes, the Mid-Western Development Region (MDR) 59,000 metric tonnes, and the Far-Western Development Region (FDR) 44,000 metric tonnes this year, he said.

Fifteen districts in EDR and 15 districts in WDR were badly affected by the drought and thereby production in the regions decreased. He further said that paddy production in 20 districts in MDR and WDR was up.

Meanwhile, the WDR stood first in maize production this year. A total of 61,000 metric tonnes maize was produced in the region, said Dr. Pathak, who is also the Spokesperson of the Ministry.
