Central Region dominates School Sports

KATHMANDU, June 15: Central Region dominated the karate event of the First National School Sports (Junior Championship) with a clean sweep of all five gold medals up for grabs on Saturday.



Central Region also secured four silver medals in karate.



Nirakar Man Pradhan of Central Region claimed gold in the boys´ singles kata held at the newly-built semi-covered hall of the National Sports Council (NSC) in Tripureshwar. Bishal Suwal of Central Region finished second while and Manoj BK of Eastern Region and Krishna Thagunna of Far-western Region finished joint third in the event.



In the girls´ singles kata, Shanta Shrestha of Central Region clinched gold finishing ahead of her teammate Karuna Shrestha. Sushma Khatri of Mid-western Region and Indramaya Tamang of Eastern Region finished third.



In the boys´ 37 kg bout, Prabin Lama of Central Region defeated teammate Bharat Argeja in the final to secure gold. Nishan Bishwas (Eastern Region) and Abinash Lama (Western Region) finished joint third.

The girls´ 35 kg final was also an all-Central Region affair as Karuna Shrestha defeated Madhu Tamang for gold. Western Region´s Pampha Sapkota and Sabina BK both finished third in the event.

Meanwhile, Nirakar Man Pradhan of Central Region claimed his second gold in the boys´ 42 kg section defeating Krishna Thagunna of Far-western Region in the final. Bhupendra Bishwakarma of Central Region and Krishna KC of Western Region secured bronze medals.



Basketball


Central Region also made a winning start in the basketball event of the championship. In the opening match of the round robin league held at Little Angels´ School, Hattiban, Central Region edged past Western Region 32-28. Min Raj Tamang topscored 12 points for Central Region.



Volleyball

Central Region registered twin wins in volleyball to advance into the final of boys´ section. Central Region registered 3-0 straight sets wins in both the games. In the first, Central Region saw off Eastern Region 25-19, 25-16, 25-13 during the match held at the covered hall of NSC.

In the second match, Central Region defeated Western Region 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 to make it to the final.



Baghchal

Central Region claimed yet another gold in baghchal as Santosh Budha defeated Kamalananda Joshi of Far-western Region 2-0 in the final held at the NSC hall, Tripureshwar. Aftab Dewan of Central Region defeated his teammate Ranjit Kunwar 2-1 in the third place play-off.



Wushu

Central Region also made a clean sweep of golds in wushu, winning all eight golds. Bijay Lama and Sushmita Tamang won golds in the chang chwan event of boys´ and girls´ sections respectively. Likewise, Dorje Lama (boys´ nan chwan), Manjari Maharjan (girls´ nan chwan), Anon Kulung (boys´ thai-chi chwan), Karuna Maharjan (girls´ thai-chi chwan), Bijay Sinjali (boys´ tau-su) and Anju Gole (girls´ chian-su) secured golds in their respective events.
