"Though the categorization was supposed to start Friday, we are starting categorization from Saturday as we completed setting up logistics in all the cantonments today (Friday)," said Balananda Sharma, coordinator of the secretariat under the Special Committee, over phone from Chitwan where he is leading a team of surveyors at Shaktikhor cantonments. "We are starting the categorization process from 8 am Saturday," he added.
But the leader of the categorization team at the Seventh Division, Gopal Bohara, said the categorization at the cantonment will begin only from Sunday as the team still needs a day´s time to set up all the logistics, according to our correspondent Dil Bahadur Chhatyal.
However, a source told Republica that the combatants close to the Mohan Baidya faction of the UCPN (Maoist) objected to the process, thus delaying the categorization process.
The combatants have sought assurance from their leadership that the future of the injured and disabled combatants would be secure. They have submitted a seven-point demand to their leadership, warning of disrupting the categorization process if their demands are not met.
Seven categorization teams led by members of the secretariat under the Special Committee have reached the cantonments to start segregating Maoist combatants into three groups -- those seeking rehabilitation, those opting for integration and those choosing voluntary retirement.
The categorization teams will verify the combatants on the basis of the information collected by UNMIN in 2007 and issue separate identity cards to the combatants depending upon their choice between rehabilitation, integration and voluntary retirement.
The categorization teams will also facilitate combatants to make an informed decision by imparting all required information relating to their future.
