BANDIPUR, July 24: The height of the waterfall makes one shiver and the sound of the roaring stream creates an extra thrill. Even more thrilling is to descend from the top of the waterfall with the help of a rope.

The door is open for adventure lovers to experience such a breathtaking moment as canyoning has been launched in Bandipur´s forests. The adventure sport is initiated by Siddhagufa Development Committee at the Kopchewan forest in view of Nepal Tourism Year 2011. [break]

“We initiated canyoning to attract tourists who love adventure sports,” said the committee´s president Lal Kumar Shrestha.

“It gives a different kind of pleasure to climb down a rope amidst the water,” said Shrestha upon descending a 60m waterfall.

There are four waterfalls in the region with heights varying from 50m to 200m. The sport is also aimed at internal tourists and the organizers have managed “home-stay” facility for tourists in about 100 houses around the area. In the initial period, all interested people will get to experience canyoning free-of-charge.

This game is possible only between mid-June to mid-September during the rainy season. It becomes more interesting to climb down in the cool waters in summer´s heat, says canyoning guide Deepak Sunar.

He also said that foreigners are more excited to venture in places with greater height and more water. “Where we see danger, there the foreigners find excitement,” said Sunar.

The organizers have appointed three technical experts to assist the canyoning enthusiasts. The spot lies about two-hour uphill walk from the Prithvi Highway at Bimalnagar.

Canyoning is not just an adventure sport but also considered good from health perspective.
