Apart from stitches, Sabitri Nepali of Lamra VDC has been bleeding excessively. Doctors have suggested to the new mom to take a rest at least for three days. However, Sabitri is undaunted by her pain and feels the exams are more important than anything else.
Sabitra's family has been carrying her on stretcher to the Durga Higher Secondary School, an examination center at Lamra. She is not even able to speak, let alone sit up. But she has been taking her exams. While she writes her papers, a caretaker takes care of her three-day old son.
Sabitri is an SLC candidate from Himsikhar Higher Secondary School, Tatopani. Health workers have said she should not be put under pressure to take her exams as she is in poor health.
"I do not have any regrets. In fact, if I want to take all the exams as I have prepared well," said she.
Though the new mother is in poor health, she has been writing her papers without assistance. She feels she did not have to miss the opportunity to appear in the examinations.
According to Sabitra, she tried her best to find a scribe who could write her papers, but to no avail.
According to Bishnu Nepali, a relative, Sabitri has been allowed to take her exams outside the examination hall. But she is often distracted when her baby cries, he said.
"My family asked me to take SLC exams next year, but I refused. I do not want to lose this opportunity," she said. This is the second time Sabitra's is appearing in the SLC examinations. She had appeared in the exam from the same center last year but failed.
Her husband is also taking SLC examinations as a regular student from Karnali Secondary School. Meanwhile, Top Bahadur Budha, school inspector, said that new mothers are not allowed to take scribe's assistance to take their papers. "Though she is in poor health, there is nothing we can do to help her," said Budha.
School inspector Makkar Bahadur Bhandari said examinees were found to have carried chits to the examination hall. "The exams are not being held fairly as examinees are being allowed to cheat," said a local.
