The businessmen took such a step after goods worth Rs 500,000--as claimed by a shop owner--were stolen from a cell phone shop inside the building recently. The UWTC´s Trade Association took the decision to the shut down the complex on Thursday.
A meeting of the association´s members held on Thursday also forwarded a nine-point demand, which they wanted fulfilled immediately, to the management of the UWTC.
Their demands include the implementation of the agreement signed between the association and management, that action be taken against the culprits of different theft cases and that reasonable compensation be provided to the victims; they also want management to come up with solutions to different problems like the lack of security, sanitation and power, and the timely adjustment of the shops´ rents, among others.
According to the association, a total of 180 shops are operating in the UWTC shopping complex.
Businessmen affiliated with the association also warned that they would not pay their rents for the period of the shops´ closure.
“We put forth these demands to the UWTC management at different intervals, but it did not pay heed to our demands. We are going to form a committee, on Friday, to press our demands,” said Sanjaya Adhikari, president of the association.
