Bird flu emergency: govt to wait for 3 more days

KATHMANDU, Aug 11: Acting upon the request of the local poultry entrepreneurs, the government has decided to wait for three more days before declaring Bhaktapur district Bird Flu emergency zone.



The decision was taken following a meeting between the government officials and the entrepreneurs on Sunday. Emerging from the meeting, the Chief District Officer of Bhaktapur Hemnath Dawadi said that the decision has been taken to keep the district under strict surveillance for the next 3 days.



“We have also decided to perform rapid test at all the poultry farms in the district under the leadership of the technical experts at the Department of Livestock Services,” he said. “If things do not seem to be under control even in three days, we will work toward declaring the emergency zone,” he added. In view of the recent outbreak of the disease in Bhaktapur, the government had on Saturday decided to declare the district as bird flu emergency zone following discussion with the officials of the Department of Livestock Services and Poultry Entrepreneurs Federation under the convenorship of Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Prabhakar Pathak.



The CDO of Bhaktapur was then authorized to enforce the decision.CDO Dawadi, deputy Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Dr. Ram Krishna Khatiwada, Regional Director Dr. Damodar Sedhain and Poultry Entrepreneurs Federation Bhaktapur officials were present in the meeting on Sunday.



“I have been reported that the meeting between the Bhaktapur district administration and the poultry businessmen has reached to the conclusion to wait and see for three more days.



From the government´s side, the district would be kept under special surveillance and carry out the special measures to bring the disease under control,” said Dr Narayan Prasad Ghimire, spokesperson at the Directorate of Animal Health (DOAH). In the last few weeks, the deadly virus was detected in over 40 poultry farms in the district.
