KATHMANDU, Oct 5 : Bir Hospital has said that it has resumed elderly care services, which had been halted after the roof of the elderly care ward developed cracks due to heavy rainfall five months ago.

Hospital sources said the service resumed after renovation of the roof by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). [break]

The KMC office has been coordinating with the hospital to provide integrated health services to the elderly and disabled people living in the capital. Director of the hospital Dr Buland Thapa said renovation of ward has given a huge respite to patients. The service was launched some six months ago but had halted soon.

Dr Thapa said that elderly people over 70 and people with disabilities have been getting free Out Patient Department (OPD) services from the department.

"MDGP doctors attend to elderly patients in the department,” added Dr Thapa. He said elderly patients usually have multiple health complications and they need geriatric care. No other hospital in the capital provides integrated services for such people. Uneducated elderly patients from far flung areas suffer a lot when they visit big hospitals for health check up. Some patients even return home without getting treatment.

The hospital said senior citizens should submit identity cards including elderly allowance certificate and citizenship to get the free treatment at the hospital. “We do not charge elderly patients. Instead we send the report to the ministry,” he added.

The National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) shows that eight percent of the population is above 60 years.
