Being green every day

KATHMANDU, June 5: Since 1972, June 5 has been marked as World Environment Day and going green has become quite fashionable. But let’s be honest, no one walks around carrying tree saplings hoping to plant them! If you can’t do something on a large scale, like a green campaign, fret not. Here is a list of things you and your friends can do every day to make sure you’re doing your bit in taking care of the planet![break]

Avoid plastic bags

Thrown plastic bags pollute the environment. Since plastic is not bio-degradable, it is hazardous to our environment. So we need to be careful how we dispose plastic bags.

Firstly, we should start from our home. We need to avoid using plastic bags in the first place and start using recycled ones or switch to cloth bags instead. Secondly, we need to spread the word and encourage others to do the same.

Print on both sides

Printing only one side of the page results in wastage of enormous quantities of paper. Though it looks neater that way, do we realize how many trees we end up wasting? We need to be conscious of the fact while preparing assignments or during other official works. We often neglect such things but we need to do something about it. We can ask our professors and teachers to organize a campaign at our schools and colleges to spread awareness about such things. We should ask if we can send our assignments through e-mail. Also, we can ask our friends and parents to do the same at their workplace. Avoid the unnecessary use of papers and make the habit of printing on both sides of the paper.

Keeping trash in your bag to take home or using green trash cans

While you tread through the streets you can’t help but notice the heaps of garbage lying haywire. It not only pollutes the environment but also invites many diseases. To promote cleaner and greener environment we need to manage the waste first and it should start from our homes. Never throw the wrappers and garbage on the streets. When on the street, make use of the green trash cans or if you can’t find one, keep the trash in your bag so that you can throw it when you come back to your place. Moreover, you can organize campaigns in cleaning the streets of your community and ask your friends and neighbors to join in for this constructive cause.

Tell your parents to compost at home

Composting is beneficial for gardens and also for the environment. It not only helps in reducing the trash but helps in creating a natural fertilizer as well. We often throw organic matter in the garbage. Instead of doing that, composting the degradable trash will turn the soil rich and improves gardens and wards off pests. So the trash that you throw uselessly like the vegetable scraps, egg shells among others, make sure you compost it in your garden or if you don’t have a garden, it’s also great for flower pots.

.

Use soft copies

We live in a world where a lot of transactions occur. Whether it’s for sending CV or for work, writing an application for workshops or making a copy of something for friends, you can help the environment if you do all of this electronically! As it is, most forms can be filled and sent online which not only saves you the hassle of printing and delivering to the specific location, but online transactions guarantee a neat and environmentally friendly option. If you don’t have e-mail access, you can always carry the data on pen drives.

Conserve water

Leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth, or taking a shower depletes supplies. In order to use as less water as possible, turn facets off when you don’t need water. Of, if you really want to save, collect water in a mug or bucket and use that instead.

Walk or use public transport

Traversing comes with its own set of woes, but riding your own vehicle only adds to the problem! With ample public transportation, you can save cash and the hassle of petrol lines by hopping into a micro or bus. Or, if you’ve got time and enjoy exercise, walk to meet your friends at your favorite hangout spots.

Spread the word

If you’re the only one picking up trash, it might not feel like you’re making that much of a difference – so get others involved! If you see someone disposing wrappers and juice boxes on the street, be kind enough to let them know they dropped something! Be sure to be gentle and remind them that the environment is their responsibility too. With soft words, we can help others be more aware, thus, helping the environment.
