BIRGUNJ: The first day of indefinite Birgunj banda called by the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industries to protest the Monday killing of a local businessman has crippled normal life in the industrial town hub on Wednesday.

An emergency meeting of the Chamber on Tuesday had announced the strike, demanding fulfillment of their four demands that included, among others, punishment to the perpetrators, declaring the deceased a martyr, guarantee of security to the businessmen.

A group of unidentified gunmen had shot at Rajesh Kyal, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting, Monday evening. The town remained very tense on Tuesday due to sporadic demonstrations held by various groups.

On Wednesday morning, most of the shops downed the shutters after groups of protesters, brandishing clubs in their hands, made a tour of the town to enforce the strike. Though educational institutions, health services and transportation were officially spared from the strike, this has its impact on these areas too.

Various underground armed groups have jostled to own up the responsibility of the killing.
