KATHMANDU, Aug 20: The issue of compensation to the families of the victims of the August 5 car accident, which killed six persons including five Indian nationals, is taking a complicated turn. [break]

While the family of the reckless driver Biplab Man Singh told myrepublica.com that they were prepared to provide the verbally agreed compensation of Rs 500,000 to the families of each victims. However, Bikash Singh, the son of Dharmanath and Binu Singh who were killed in the accident, he has not been called for the compensation.

Biplab´s family has already handed over Rs 500, 000 to the family of Sujan Shrestha, the single Nepali victim of the accident.

Families of the Indian victims accepted the bodies and cremated them on Monday. “It is our positive gesture to settle the issue,” Bikash said, “But Biplab´s family says it has run out of money.”

The victims´ families had refused to sign the agreement that also included sponsoring education to the children of the victims and rather demanded hard cash during negotiations mediated by Metropolitan Police. However, Biplab´s family had begged time which led to differences between the two parties. “We can not wait for infinite time for compensation,” Bikash said.

Biplab´s elder brother Sayal said cash would be handed over outright and for that the victims´ families should come forth. “They call me for discussion at different places but I want to settle it at once,” he added.

Biplab´s family also says the victims´ families are ´not showing interest´ to settle the case. They have even been threatening to lodge a murder case against Biplab if their demands are not met properly, according to Biplab´s family.

Those killed in the accident are Dharmanath Singh, Binu Singh, Madan Kumar Gupta, Krishna Devi Gupta, Sanjay Gupta from Bihar of India and Sujan Shrestha of Sindhupalchowk. Dipak Gupta, an Indian National, who was critically injured in the accident, is now recovering at Neuro Hospital, Bansbari.
