Army finishes group stage with cent percent record

KATHMANDU, March 17: Anil Mandal completed his second century for the Tribhuvan Army Club on Monday in the Men's Senior One-day National Cricket Tournament as the departmental team finished group stage with cent percent winning record.

Army Club, which had already secured its place in the semifinals, won all five matches of Group A making Region 2 (Birgjunj) as its last victim. Army beat Birgunj by 145 runs at the Pulchowk Engineering Ground.


Despite the defeat Birgunj, which has won three matches, advanced into the last four as Group A runner-up by the virtue of better net-run-rate to Region No 5 (Nepalgunj), despite finishing with equal six points.

Birgunj was bundled out for 117 runs in its chase of 263 runs target set by Army. Nepalgunj had chances of advancing into the knockout stage if Birgunj was restricted to 104 runs.

Anil Sah scored 43 runs and Amit Shrestha added 36 runs for Birgunj while in the run chase..

Bikram Sov and Rahul BK bagged four wickets each, while Chandra Saud bagged remaining two wickets for Army Club.

Earlier, put to bat first, Army Club scored 262 runs losing nine wickets in allotted 50 overs after Anil scored 113 runs smashing 10 boundaries.

Anil had hit first century of the tournament against Region No 1 (Biratnagar) scoring 114 runs.

Bikram remained not out on 53 runs to help Army Club post challenging target.

Ram Naresh Giri, Yashin Hawari and Irshad Ahamad claimed two wickets each for Birgunj.

Anil and Bikram of Army Club were jointly awarded with man-of-the-match awards.

In Group B match at Tribhuvan University Ground, Region No 6 (Baitadi), in its first match, thrashed Region No 9 (Dhangadhi) by seven wickets as former chased 90 runs target in 20 overs losing three wickets.

Prem Tamang remained not out on 31 runs and Roshan Nepali contributed 22 runs for Baitadi.

Dhangadi bowler Binod Lama bagged all three wickets of Baidati.

Earlier, Dhangadhi was bundled out for 89 runs in 37.2 overs. The man-of-the-match Yogendra Karki bagged five wickets for Baitadi giving away only 15 runs in 10 overs bowling.

Skipper Raju Rijal scored highest 39 runs for Dhangadhi facing 74 runs hitting a six and four boundaries.
