KATHMANDU, June 12: “We aren’t eyeing to compete with any other international film festivals taking place time and again in Kathmandu,” explained Ferenc Weigl, First Secretary, Political Affairs at the Delegation of the European Commission to Nepal (EU) at Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) on last Wednesday. “We’re here purely to give Nepali audience a European flavor of cinematography and art.”[break]

The press conference raised the curtain on the 2nd European Film Festival that begins from tomorrow, June 13, and will run through June 17, at the Nepal Army Auditorium Hall in Kathmandu.

After receiving overwhelming response of the festival’s first edition last year, the European Commission to Nepal is more positive of making this a grand fiesta this season.

Weigl added, “In Kathmandu, there’s a huge number of audience attracted to British films. We want to share European culture and lifestyle with people in Nepal. In addition, this festival will also showcase Europeans’ creativity in cinematography and choreography in films.”

Paula Middleton, Country Director of British Council Nepal, explained that this year’s festival will be featuring 10 European films of different origins and themes. This fiesta aims at building a strong tradition in the years ahead with the hope of reaching out to an ever-growing number of Nepali audiences.

The movies to be screened this time are selected for contemporary stories, comedy lines, and entertaining screenplays. There are two movies each from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom – all EU member states represented in Nepal.

Philippe Martin, Director at Alliance Francaise in Kathmandu, pointed out how such festivals have become a bridging factor to bring together the social behaviors of people across the globe, and have helped understand the different ways of living and struggling in life amongst the peoples from various places around.

Weigl concluded by hoping that if the European Film Festival succeeds in rooting itself in the Kathmandu Valley, the organizers will widen its horizons and see what they can do to help Nepali filmmakers come up with better quality pictures.

Free passes for the five days of screening are available in advance at British Council in Lainchaur, Alliance Francaise in Tripureshwar, Goethe Zentrum, and Skoda Showroom in Thapathali.
