“After Pokhara Tourism Council (PTC), an umbrella organization of tourism entrepreneurs, urged us to set up a rescue team, we have decided to deploy a team to carry out rescue efforts in case of need,” said SP Shambhu Uprety, chief of the battalion.
The decision follows the death of two persons after a boat capsized in Begnas Lake of Pokhara on April 3. Three others had gone missing in the same incident.
This is the best option we have to prevent boating casualties, added SP Uprety.
According to SP Uprety, the APF rescue team to be deployed at the lake will also be provided with equipment to facilitate rescue efforts. The team will be provided with a motorboat, binoculars, ropes, boat and life jackets, among other things.
“We have demanded also demanded a viewing tower for the rescue team near the lake,” said he.
The Kalika battalion has a 40-men strong rescue management team. The team has received rescue management training from Rescue Management Training Center of AFP at Kurintar, Chitwan.
President of PTC, Surya Bahadur Bhujel informed that preparation is on to construct a separate tower for the rescue team. “We are going to erect a viewing tower from where the rescue team can have the entire view of the lake at one glance,” he said, adding, PTC is looking for a suitable area to build the tower.
