And we still watch cartoons!

KATHMANDU, June 22: Watching cartoons was one of the favorite things we did when we were kids and may be it is still so. There´s nothing to be ashamed of! No matter how much home assignment we had or mom´s scolding we got, we still managed to watch that favorite cartoon and it was totally worth the scolding and time.

So now that we are all grown up and have many other priorities, do we not watch cartoons?[break] The answer would be “no”. Many of us still watch cartoons because they are recreational and at the same time, relaxing and fun, unlike action or love movies we watch.

Sumit Sharma, 18, a self-claimed cartoon addict, said, “I grew up watching a lot of cartoons and I still do and naturally my life has been influenced in many ways by them.” He also mentioned that he likes the story of cartoons because of the animation and partly because the fairies always make him laugh.

He also stressed on the fact that during his childhood days he was in love with Princess Aurora, from the ´Sleeping Beauty´. Sharma these days is obsessed with DVD´s of all kinds of animated movies and watches them time and again. He mentioned Shrek, Ice Age, Happy Feet, Kung Fu Panda, Flushed Away as his favorites.

Cartoons are much like story books with morals in the end. Books are boring to read for some and cartoons do the trick. And so, many young adults take cartoons as an inspiration or a motivating factor. Youths too seem to believe that watching cartoons make them capable of meeting life´s challenges not because they are only fun to watch but because they teach you something at the end.

“I am fond of watching cartoons like Shrek, Winnie the Pooh, Popeye The Sailorman, Tom and Jerry, Jungle Book and the like because I am entertained watching these programs,” said Shweta Khand, 20, a cartoon enthusiast. She also added that she has learnt tricks and enjoyed observing the world filled with fantasy from cartoons.

Most parents think that watching cartoons is a waste of time and unnecessary and that the young ones should focus on their studies more. Our society considers that cartoons are for young adults and that they “have to” do something in their life rather than watching cartoons. Parents need to understand that cartoons are not a waste of time unless someone watches them 12 hours a day.

Anjila Shrestha, 20, has a large list of favorite cartoons. “Perman, Ninja Hatodi, Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo, The Bolt, Shrek, Madagascar and so forth are my favorite cartoons because I really enjoy when I watch them,” she said. Anjila takes cartoons as a stress and tension reliever.

The love of cartoon among the young is quite clear. Even though they are not allowed to watch cartoons frequently, they find a way to show their love for it through their creativity like painting a cute cartoon character or by writing about it.

Many wear cartoon printed tees, set badges on their bags or paste stickers of their favorite character on their cell phones. The love for cartoons never dies no matter how much one denies that s/he hates cartoons from the bottom of their heart. Cartoons are cartoons. They are fun! What´s there to hate about?
