DADELDHURA, June 26: While the locals of Darchula are yet to come to terms with the loss caused by the devastating Mahakali River flood, acute shortage of drinking water for a week now has only added to their plight.

Due to lack of drinking water, around 300 households affected by the flood have been forced to drink dirty water of the flooding Mahakali River. The locals of around four villages have been affected due to water shortage after the flooding Rungun River swept away Parshuram Drinking Water Project (PDWP) a week ago. Locals of Bhattraigauh, Ghattepalat, Nathgau and Bahadure villages are facing a severe drinking water crisis as a result. [break]

“We have been drinking the dirty water from the Mahakali River. There is no other water source nearby,” said a local of Bhattraigauh. “As other water sources are miles away from the village, there is no other option but to drink the dirty water,” added he.

According to Chandra Bahadur Khadka, chief of PDWP, the flood swept away the only source of drinking water for the villagers. “The water was supplied from Shirsha VDC, which is some five kilometer away from the flood-affected villages. After the havoc, the villagers have no option than to drink the contaminated water of Mahakali and Rungun rivers,” he said.

Khadka further said that the water project, which was built a decade ago, has been damaged beyond repair by the flood in Rungun River.

Meanwhile, a team led by assistant engineer Nabin Paneru had inspected the damaged pipes of the water project. “The project is of no use now as the flood has swept away its main pipeline,” said he.

He said the government should find out other alternative for supplying drinking water to the locals.
