KATHMANDU, Aug 6: The driver whose car hit killed six people and injured one pedestrian on Wednesday surrendered 24 hours later, police said. In his statement to police, Biplab Man Singh said he had lost control after trying to avoid hitting a motorcycle and slammed onto the street railing near the Bir Hopital.[break]

This version is contrary to an eyewitness account which said the speeding car was trying to overtake the motorcycle.

A police officer told myrepublica.com that Singh who had turned 21 on Wednesday, walked into Kathmandu district police office at Hanumandhoka after Wednesday midnight. In the accident five Indians and one Nepali were killed and another Indian injured. Singh had fled soon after the accident. His car was severely damaged.

In his statement to police, he said that he swerved left trying to avoid hitting the motorcycle but the turn was more than he intended and hit the railing and the people on the sidewalk. His statement says he saw just one person and did not notice others. The speed of the car, Singh said, was around 70-80 km per hour.

He had set out from his home at Khichapokhari to drop some friends after his birthday party celebrations. Singh claimed that he had taken wine but insisted he was not drunk. Police said he has not revealed the names of people who were in the car with him at the time of the accident.

He had come on a vacation from Bangalore, India, where he studies Bachelor of Business Management (BBM).

According to lone eyewitness, Govinda Adhikari, the car was in great speed and made a U-turn after hitting the people on the sidewalk. There were two other people in the car and all of them fled.

Police said they are investigating to find out more details.

Some of the unanswered questions so far:

1) What took Biplab so long to surrender?

2) How drunk was he? Was he trying to empty his body system of alcohol content?

3) The incident already led to protest, with people demanding arrest and punishment of the driver and it could have turned nasty.
Where was he hiding for nearly 24 hours?

4) What was the speed of car when it hit the people?

5) Why didn´t the co-passengers inform the police?
