A Standing Committee meeting of the UCPN (Maoist) on Thursday morning decided to stake claim on government leadership and speed up dialogues with other parties to form a Maoist-led national consensus government. [break] The Maoist party also formed a three-member talk team led by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Two other members of the team include vice chairmen Mohan Baidya and Dr Baburam Bhattarai.
The CPN-UML also held a standing committee meeting on the issue of government formation. The party has decided to expedite talks to forge consensus. “We decided not to stake leadership claim at first. But our party will not shy away from shouldering the responsibility if parties reach agreement on our leader,” said UML secretary Yuv Raj Gyawali.
The UML has reiterated that the party can´t accept Maoist leadership in the new government until the party transforms itself into a civilian party by detaching itself from its combatants and disbanding the paramilitary structure of its youth wing Young Communist League.
Meanwhile, an informal meeting of Nepali Congress Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting scheduled to be held on Thursday afternoon to discuss the political situation in the aftermath of the prime minister´s resignation was put off at the eleventh hour. According to NC General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi, the meeting was put off to wait for the arrival of the party´s Acting President Sushil Koirala on Friday. “Acting President will decide when to call the CWC meeting,” said Nidhi. Thursday´s meeting was put off as CWC members suggested not to hold “informal meeting”.
