KATHMANDU, July 8: Ramila Tandukar, just turned 16 and she does not have driving license. The volleyball player received the popular player of the year award during the Pulsar Sports Award 2068 and took home a motorbike in prize.

It was not the first automobile she has received as a prize. She was adjudged the best player during the sixth and seventh edition of the Blue Sky Dhorpatan Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament and had won TVS scooter on both the occasion.

"As I won three bikes within three years, my friends and family members tease me asking me to win a bike for them," said Tandukar.

However, volleyball career was not a cakewalk for Tandukar, who recently passed SLC scoring 73 percent from the New Diamond Academy, Naikap, Kathmandu.

"She was enrolled in our school in 2063 BS in class five. Impressed with her skills we included her in the team," recalled Kumar Rai, the volleyball coach of New Diamond School.

Her grandfather Indra Bahadur was against her rigorous training schedule. "During the training I used to go gym for physical fitness but my loving grandpa was against it," recalled Tandukar.

"He is still has dissatisfaction over me going to gym. However, he is happy now as I have been winning prizes," she added.

Despite all odds, Tandukar continued playing volleyball. "She started playing for the school team since 2064 BS. She was one of the key members of our school team when we made podium finish in the Dhorpatan Women´s Double League in 2065 BS," said coach Rai.

Tandukar won dozens of trophies for her school. She was adjudged the best spiker and the best player in several tournaments.

Representing Central Region, she won the title of the Second Women´s Beach Volleyball Tournament held in Kathmandu last month. Kamala Pun was her partner during the title victory.

She represented Central Region during the fifth and sixth edition of the National Games. "I´m just 16 and I´ve a long way to go. I´ll take forward my volleyball career along with education," said Tandukar.

Though her personal career is blooming, she lamented that she could not get opportunity to represent the country at the international level. "I´ve been doing well in domestic tournaments for the last four years but Nepali women´s volleyball team has not participated in any international tournaments during this period," said Tandukar. "I will definitely try to prove myself at the international level," she added.
