$2m US assistance to NA

KATHMANDU, Feb 7: While welcoming the release of the first group of former Maoist combatants from the cantonments, the United States has announced $2 million (approximately Rs 155 million) assistance to equip and train the Nepal Army directorate.



The US Embassy in Kathmandu said in a statement, “As the integration process begins in the coming weeks, we will work closely with the Ministry of Defense and Nepal Army to identify and coordinate the specific needs for which these funds will be used.” [break]



The statement said the release of the first group of former Maoist combatants from the cantonments marks a historic moment in the peace process, as these former combatants finally take off their uniforms and rejoin civilian communities.



“We are optimistic that the nation´s leaders will continue to work together to resolve remaining elements of the integration process,” the statement added.
