In the last fiscal year, 298 couples divorced in the district, according to Surya Bahadur Thapa, the court´s registrar.[break] Of a total of 363 cases filed at the court during the period, 65 cases are yet to be resolved. This is a rise from the 316 divorce cases filed at the court in the preceding fiscal year, of which 289 were settled with separation.
“Eighty percent women seeking divorce have cited domestic violence,” said Thapa. “The rest have cited lack of proper upkeep, unfair treatment, husband settling in foreign lands or husband falling in love with another woman, among others,” he said.
As per the law, a husband needs recommendation from local bodies and seek court´s approval to get a divorce, while a wife can get a divorce simply by filing an application at the court of law.
The ease with which a woman can get a divorce has spiked the number of divorce cases, according to law practitioners. A majority of women in the district have sought divorce either to migrate to a foreign country or to start an affair with another man.
According to a lawyer, the divorcees are mostly women who married for love, have children and are aged between 30 and 35. But there are cases of women who have just entered an arranged marriage seeking divorce. Such women have cited the need to get out of a marriage that they were forced into.
