PARBAT, July 17: It has been almost a year since 17-year-old Sita Chhetri of Bhangara-1 disappeared. Despite several attempts from police and her relatives to locate her, her whereabouts are still unknown. Some suspect she eloped with Milan Chhetri of Thapathana-2 but Milan has denied the claims sternly.

Similarly, Tulishi Gaudel, 20, of Devisthan-9 disappeared on September 19 along with her two-year-old son. Her relatives have claimed that she left without informing anyone and they don't the reason for it.Likewise, Anita Poudel of Lekhfant-2 disappeared around six months ago while she was traveling in a bus en route Beni from Kathmandu, with her five-year-old son. "Although Anita's family had filed a police case on her disappearance along with her son, Sabin, we are yet to learn her whereabouts," informed Mahendra Kumar Shrestha, chief of District Police Office (DPO), Parbat.

These are only some representative cases of people mysteriously disappearing from Parbat district. As many as 106 women and children have already disappeared since July last year, according to the DPO.

"We are able to establish contact with only 45 people out of the total disappeared in the district," said Shrestha.

According to him, 23 out of the total 50 women 8 out of 11 disappeared boys and 14 out of 19 disappeared girls during the duration have come into contact.

"Most of those who disappeared were found to have eloped, on tour without informing their families, or working in hotels. However, whereabouts of large numbers of disappeared people are still unknown," said Shrestha.

Additionally, many are leaving houses without informing anyone due to conflicts among family members and poor economical condition. "People feel like running away rather than quarreling with family members on a daily basis," added Shrestha.

Along with that, some of these women and children are also suspected to have fallen prey to human traffickers. "Things become more complicated when police refuse to register complaints of disappearance filed by victim's family," said human rights activist Madhav Raj Pandey.

"The government is not able to effectively implement laws regarding violence against women and children. Until and unless the government can efficiently implement it, such cases of disappearance will rise further," Pandey added.
