Constitution amendment is not aimed at taking back civil liberties: DPM Singh

KATHMANDU, Aug 19: Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister, Prakash Man Singh, has stated that there is no truth in the propaganda claiming that citizens' rights are being usurped through the constitution amendment.

Addressing a program organized in the capital on Monday, DPM Singh argued that the coalition government formed by the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML) will not undermine civic rights, as both parties have fought for the people's rights. "There is false publicity suggesting that the government will curtail most of the provisions in the constitution through its amendment. The NC and UML are parties that have fought for the protection of the people's rights. There is no truth in the propaganda that these parties, which have formed a coalition government, will curtail these rights," he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Singh emphasized that the NC joined hands with the UML to bring political stability to the country. "The two large parties have come together because the government kept changing every seven to eight months, leading to uncertainty about its stability, which impaired the functioning of the government," he said, adding that positive initiatives are underway to bring the economy back on track following the formation of this government.

DPM Singh asserted that the government will demonstrate its capability in driving the economy forward.
