Karua losing its originality

Kaura—a traditional dance performed by the Magar Community, is losing its originality. Performed at various functions, the authentic folk dance can rarely be seen in Gandaki Province: The region of its inception.  Amidst loss of its originality, the craze of this dance form is booming in recent time.

Women clad in traditional Magar dress that comprises gunyo choli, patuka, teki, hamle, yellow potey, and men with damfus (a popular Nepali instrument played mostly in the Himalayan region) and kartal (a pair of castanets) get ready to grove to the tunes of Kaura every evening in Chitre Bhanjyang of Syangja.

The above mentioned Nepali song reflects rural society in the western region of Nepal, where locals used to perform traditional songs and dance called Kaura. Kaura is a tradition of the Magar community. However, the charm and originality of Kaura has been depleting with time and changing culture. These days, Kaura is limited to certain cultural events and programs, lacking authenticity.
