KATHMANDU, June 10: Lawmaker Gagan Kumar Thapa, has said that a long-term solution should be sought for waste management in the Kathmandu Valley. Thapa put forth a proposal to immediately allocate Rs 5 billion for land acquisition in the affected areas.

At a meeting held at the Ministry of Urban development between Minister Ram Kumari Jhakri and representatives of Kathmandu Valley, Nuwakot and Dhading, Thapa also said that the budget should be allocated for the land acquisition of the landfill site by cutting the budget of Kathmandu, if needed.

Thapa said that the agreements reached in the past should be implemented. He further added that the trust deficit has surfaced between the government authorities and locals due to non-implementation of earlier commitments. "Citizens should be compensated for land acquisition. Let's cut the budget allocated for the development of Kathmandu this year and ensure a budget of Rs 5 to 6 billion." Thapa said.

Thapa maintained that compensation should be given on the basis of environmental impact assessment. Thapa said that an atmosphere of trust would be created after allocating a budget for the land acquisition.

Thapa also demanded the formation of a monitoring committee comprising members of the House of Representatives from Kathmandu, Dhading and Nuwakot to implement the agreements reached in the past and the newly introduced ones. "We also want to work," Thapa said. “We will facilitate where there is a policy problem.”
