KATHMANDU, Aug. 19: Within a week of implementation of the new laws, opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has voiced for reforms and amendment to the Criminal Code arguing that the recently-implemented law would affect citizens' freedom of opinion and expression.

Organizing a news conference at the party central office in Sanepa today, NC spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma announced the party's official position on civil codes and criminal codes saying that the provisions could challenge the freedom of professionals and affect the doctors' professional dignity as well. He said that NC's attention was drawn in regard to the contents of the criminal codes because if could affect the police administration on investigation.

He shared that NC is for revision and amendment to the codes through consultations with the stakeholders. Sharma, however, termed that Civil Code implemented from August 17 was the historical document in the country's modern state mechanism. Some flaws realized prior to the implementation of the laws should be revised with necessary amendment, Sharma shared the party's opinion.

On the occasion, Sharma said that the taxation system should be justifiable and the practical domain should not be forgotten while talking about the theoretical issue of tax system and commented that the rising level of tax in the local levels would continue to affect the citizens badly. The NC has also asked the government to immediately take initiatives to resolve the ongoing debates regarding the taxation system.

Meanwhile, the NC is holding interactions with the chiefs and deputy chiefs of the local levels elected from the party across the country on 27 August in the party's central office.
