Natural disasters kill 890 people every year  

A new data by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center showed that at least 890 people die and 1,771 are injured every year in Nepal due to natural disasters. These disasters affect 132,161 houses and destroy property equivalent to Rs 1.31 billion every year. Over the past four decades, around 22,216 natural disasters injured 79,702 people and damaged 5,947,268 houses. 

Villages turn into ghost towns due to out-migration

Human settlements in rural areas of Palpa are gradually becoming deserted due to rampant migration of people to urban areas. Lack of sufficient and better facilities of education, health, drinking water and road are driving factors behind increased out-migration. Phoksingdanda, Bhanjyangthok, Kotthar, Belauja, Lanbe, Ranibas, and Jharleng of Phoksingkot of Rambha Rural Municipality-3 are seeing an exodus of people.  

HoR approves proposal to amend Public Security Bill 2075

The meeting of the House of Representatives today unanimously approved a proposal seeking consideration on the Public Security (Third Amendment) Bill 2075. The Ministry of Home Affairs had proposed to insert Section 3.1(a) in the original act, stating that when a person is put under preventive detention, local authority would have to inform; including one’s situation to family members or close relatives of the person within 24 hours.

Bio engineering techniques adopted to prevent natural calamities

To stabilize slopes and prevent soil erosion and landslides, bio engineering techniques have been adopted along the Narayangadh-Munglin road section. Use of the technology will prevent possible damage along the road section while carrying out the maintenance and road expansion works. 

WHO says Congo faces 'very high' risk from Ebola outbreak

Democratic Republic of Congo faces a "very high" public health risk from Ebola after the disease was confirmed in one patient in a major city, the World Health Organization said on Friday, raising its assessment from "high" previously. The risk to countries in the region was now "high", raised from "moderate", but the global risk remained "low". The reassessment came after the first confirmed case in Mbandaka, a city of around 1.5 million. 

Portugal leaves several Euro 2016 winners in its World Cup squad

Portugal manager Fernando Santos says it "hurts" to leave out several members of the Euro 2016 winning squad for this summer's World Cup in Russia. Nani, Andre Gomes, Renato Sanches, Eder, Bernardo Silva, Adrien Silva, Cedric Soares, Joao Mario, Ruben Neves and Bruno Alves will miss out from the team.
