KATHMANDU, Dec 13: The government has started consultation with stakeholders with the aim of prioritizing local technology and new inventions in disaster risk reduction (DRR) programs.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs consulted with local efforts and innovators' associations working in the field of DRR in Kathmandu.

In the program, there was a discussion about the local technology and innovations adopted by the local organizations to reduce the risk of various types of disasters. After the discussion, the ministry said that the local technologies and innovations that can be useful to make the government's efforts to reduce disaster risks will be included in the government's action plan.

In the program, Home Secretary Binod Prakash Singh said that the government will give priority to the successful practices of disaster risk reduction at the local level. He said that although the work of spreading public awareness in the field of disaster risk reduction in Nepal is sufficient, policies and regulations related to creating disaster-friendly development have not been made. He admitted that due to the fact that the relevant bodies could not be serious, the policies, rules and laws related to development and construction could not be implemented effectively.

He said that since the long-term impact of the road widening that is being done in the name of development cannot be predicted and the necessary policy arrangements are not made in the future, he will be forced to bear the huge losses that may be caused by it in the future. He admitted that all three levels of government have failed in implementing the existing standards in road widening, stone and gravel sand business.
