Bagmati province observes public holiday with formal introduction of Tamang and Newari as official languages

KATHMANDU, May 6: Bagmati province is observing a public holiday today. 

A cabinet meeting of the Bagmati provincial government decided to grant a public holiday throughout the province today marking the occasion of introducing Tamang and Nepali languages as official languages in the province.

Minister of Culture, Tourism and Cooperatives of the province Shailendra Man Bajracharya  announced that Newari and Tamang languages will be introduced as official languages in the province today by organizing a ceremony in Basantpur, Kathmandu.

Following the cabinet’s decision on April 24, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law issued a notice in the gazette confirming the holiday on May 6.

Purna Bahadur Darji, secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, stated that various offices, associations, educational institutions, and provincial government-owned industrial sectors would observe the public holiday.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is scheduled to inaugurate the official language designation program in Basantapur, Kathmandu.

Ganga Narayan Shrestha, Minister of Internal Affairs for Bagmati Province, emphasized that after May 6, government offices across the province would incorporate Nepali, Tamang, and Newari languages on their signboards.
