KATHMANDU, May 24: The Nepalese Army (NA) is about to purchase military equipment worth Rs 6 billion for the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission. The Army has completed the final stage of procurement of 26 Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) and weapons worth Rs 6 billion from neighboring China.

KATHMANDU, May 23: The police have submitted an investigation report to the District Government Attorney’s Office, alleging that former deputy prime minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former home minister Bal Krishna Khand, secretary Tek Narayan Pandey (the then home secretary) were involved in the case of swindling money from Nepali citizens promising to send them to the US as fake Bhutanese refugees.

KATHMANDU, May 21: The police have prepared a report after investigating high-profile individuals in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam. The police report includes statements of the victims as well as middlemen arrested by the police and some bounced cheques and SMS as evidence. The police report also made a startling revelation that a report prepared by a task force led by Bal Krishna Panthi was fake.

KATHMANDU, May 17: At a time when people who have held positions like Home Minister and Home Secretary who run the home ministry which is the second most important ministry after the Prime Minister’s Office are found involved in defrauding Nepalis by promising to send to them to America as fake Bhutanese, it is also found that former Member of Parliament (MP) Angtawa Sherpa opened an office to register the forms of Nepali citizens as Bhutanese refugees. The video of him running an office in a house in Lalitpur to register forms to send Nepali citizens to the United States as a fake Bhutanese refugee has been released.

KATHMANDU, May 11: After arresting former home minister Bal Krishna Khand in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, the police have intensified their investigation “to find other links”. Sources said that the police investigation is focused on finding out whether there was a financial transaction involving Khand with the gang of con men who took Nepali citizens as Bhutanese refugees to America.

KATHMANDU, April 30: After the cancellation of the national identity card management procedure, the government is now preparing to provide Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's IT company to verify the collected details. Schema Technology Pvt Ltd is about to get this opportunity after the government canceled the procedure related to inter-system affiliation which was prepared and implemented earlier by the Department of National Id and Civil Registration (DoNIDCR).

KATHMANDU, April 22:The license revocation process of Smart Telecom, initiated by the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, has been stalled for some time. The process has been stalled after the Patan High Court issued a short-term interim order not to implement the decision to cancel the license of Smart Telecom.

KATHMANDU, April 19:  The government has canceled the procedure which was introduced to give private companies the responsibility of obtaining the personal details of citizens for the issuance of national identity cards. A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Tuesday rejected the procedure that was hastily issued by the then Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane and decided to proceed with the investigation process.

KATHMANDU, April 18: Under the Ministry of Health and Population, the Department of Health Services has entered into a contract for the purchase of iron pills for pregnant women, causing a huge loss to the state. When the health minister was not appointed, the department entered into an agreement with JS Medical Pharma, the official seller of NovaGenetica Company, for the purchase of iron pills worth Rs 200 million, causing a loss of Rs 110 million to the state.

KATHMANDU, April 17: While the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has advanced the process of asset management to take ownership of Smart Telecom Company by the government, Ncell has prepared to buy it at the price of scrap value. After the government took ownership of Smart and started the auction process, Ncell started the bid to extend its service period by participating in it. It is said that Ncell is in the strategy of buying the telecommunication service provider company Smart Telecom Company and not transferring ownership to the government by extending its deadline.

KATHMANDU, April 16: About 90 tons of explosives are being brought to Nepal from China for the construction of infrastructure projects. As the explosives used for infrastructure projects were not available from Nepali Army (NA) and India, they are being brought from China.

KATHMANDU,  April  7:  The proposed amendments to the Telecommunications Act 2053 have met with significant resistance from employees. During internal discussions held within the Ministry of Information and Communication over the past few days, employees expressed vehement opposition, arguing that the draft bill would not serve the best interests of the nation.

KATHMANDU, April 4: The US military has shifted its focus toward high altitude training in Nepal, as joint exercises between the Nepali and American forces continue to take place. As part of this initiative, the US Army has begun prioritizing search and rescue training in the high Himalayan and mountainous regions of Nepal.

KATHMANDU, April 1: The draft bill to amend the Telecommunications Act has removed the provision that Ncell will be owned by the Government of Nepal in 2029. The provision in sub-section 1 of section 25 of the Act has been deleted in the draft bill. Section 25 of the existing Act mentions the period and renewal of the permit. In sub-section 1 of the same section, the period of the permit is said to be 25 years at most.

KATHMANDU, March 31: A private sector telecommunication service provider, Ncell, which should supposedly come under the government’s ownership after 2029 as per the existing laws, will not come under the ownership of the government as manipulations are being made in the draft bill being introduced to bring amendment to the existing Telecommunication Act, 1997.

The 25-year license period that Ncell obtained on September 1, 2004, is expiring in September 2029. As per the existing Telecommunication Act, 1997, after the expiry of the license period, Ncell will come under the ownership of Nepal government if it chooses not to limit its foreign ownership to less than 50 percent.

KATHMANDU, March 21: The government has drafted a bill to allow the recording of personal conversations on mobile phones. The bill prepared by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology for an amendment to the Telecommunications Act has such provision in sub-sections 1 and 2 of Section 77 of the draft.

KATHMANDU, March 20: With a few days left for the appointment of the new IGP, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) is preparing to introduce a new Police Act to replace the Nepal Police Act, 2012. The government is planning to introduce a new police act to remove the provision of the 30-year term of service in the existing police act.
