KOLKATA, India, May 25: A mountaineer, a member of the first Indian team that scaled the fifth highest peak in the world, Mt Makalu, died following an accident while descending, the Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted sources as saying on Monday.

Sangat Ram Thakur (36), a junior instructor of the famous Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, breathed his last at a nursing home in Kathmandu yesterday, a senior HMI official told PTI Monday.

He was part of the 15-member Indo-Bangladesh team of which five members -- Kusang Sherpa, Powell Sharma, Neel Chand, Rajendra Singh and Raj Pal -- scaled Mt Makalu around 6:45 a.m. on May 19, the official said.

The HMI official said Thakur had a fall while descending the mountain and had been airlifted from the base camp to Kathmandu.

"He sustained head injuries and the scan revealed that there was a haemorrhage on the right side of his head. He was immediately put on a ventilator in the ICU and yesterday he breathed his last there," he added.

Thakur, who hailed from Manali, is survived by wife and two sons. All the three had gone to Kathmandu after the accident.

He was cremated at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu on Sunday.
