KATHMANDU, July 3: TU Teaching Hospital has produced biogas from biodegradable matters including human organs.

Currenlty under a pilot project, the biogas is being produced from human organs, blood and other matters produced in the course of conducting surgery at the hospital.

The blood and extracted organs, waste foods and biodegradable materials which are no longer useful are collected and used to produce biogas.

This biogas is being used to cook food and boil water at the hospital kitchen.

The hospital produces a huge amount of waste everyday which is likely to cause and spread diseases if not controlled.

This pilot project of biogas can be an example to many other hospitals.

Earlier, the waste produced by the hospital used to be transported to Okharpauwa landfill site by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
