Indigenous and Madhesi students announce phase-wise protests

KATHMANDU, May 14: Demanding timely promulgation of the new constitution with ethnicity-based federal system, student organizations of the ruling five Madhes-based political parties and Nepal Indigenous Nationalities Students´ Federation on Monday announced a series of protest programs starting May 15.



Chairman of Tarai Madhes Student Front Suresh Mandal said they will submit a memorandum to President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA) Subas Nembang on Tuesday to draw their attention toward their demand. [break]



Mandal said they will organize open discussion in front of the CA building at New Banehswar on May 17 and a torch rally on May 18.



Similarly, they have called a general strike for May 20, 21 and 22 which would be followed by relay hunger on May 23 and 24. Likewise, they have announced to hold a protest rally decked in attires and carrying symbols representing their distinct cultural identities on May 25.



They plan to launch fast unto death from the same day. The indigenous and Madhesi students´ organizations have also demanded that the state restructuring be done as per the recommendation of the majority members of the State Restructuring Commission (SRC).
