SC show cause to govt over cold wave deaths

KATHMANDU, Dec 22: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday ordered government authorities to furnish written clarifications within seven days over the cold wave deaths in the Tarai.



Responding to a writ petition filed by lawyer Madhav Basnet, a single bench of SC Justice Prakash Wasti issued the order. Basnet and three lawyers had filed the petition on Wednesday alleging that the state was not serious enough save lives.[break]



It is estimated that over 31 people died over a period of two weeks due to extreme cold. The government hadn´t distributed quilts and firewood to the poor in the cold wave hit areas.
