KATHMANDU, Oct 13: Local level elected representatives are not allowed to engage in election campaigning for or against any candidate or party within their own municipality.
The Election Code of Conduct, 2079 issued for the election of members of the House of Representatives (HoR) and the provincial assemblies provides that if the elected executives want to campaign in favor of a candidate in places other than the local level where they were elected, they can only do so without using government resources (vehicles, security personnel, etc.).
Issuing a statement on Wednesday, Assistant Spokesperson of the Election Commission (EC) Surya Prasad Aryal stated that a complaint was received about an elected official being involved in campaigning in favor of a candidate at the local level against the code of conduct. As a result, the District Monitoring Committee has been instructed to take necessary action as per the law.
The EC has also instructed the relevant local level offices and chief administrative officers to provide necessary information and support in accordance with section 7 of the Election Commission Act, 2073, if the elected officials of the concerned local level are found to have acted against the code of conduct.
