KATHMANDU, June 22: The attraction of young people towards government jobs has decreased recently due to various reasons, including foreign employment. In a recent meeting, I once again realized the constraints that young persons living with physical disabilities face in daily life. The common perception is that the vast majority of these youths struggle for survival. Lacking jobs and quality education not only due to inaccessible schools but also due to a system that does not recognize their specific needs, these youths are left behind by society.

KAMALAMAI, Aug 27: Bharat Kafle of Harshahi in Dudhauli Municipality-6 in Sindhuli can be a vivid example for many people for he has chosen to stay back home to do something good, and his hard work is paying off. His motivation to toil back in the home country comes at a time when youth in particular are flying in hordes to foreign countries in search of better opportunities.

Why are youths leaving the country? I asked the question to a class of pre-diploma level students in Saraswati Higher Secondary in Ghorahi, Dang. The answer was spontaneous and unanimous – because there are no opportunities in the country. I wasn’t surprised by the response as it has been the popular narrative in the country.

The crux of the COVID-19 employment impact lies in underemployment, which globally has contributed more to estimated job losses (in work hours) than unemployment and whose impact is potentially longer term. Given our pre-existing problem of underemployment, especially among youth in the 25-39 age group, this represents an unprecedented employment challenge considering that we are right in the middle of our demographic dividend.
