Nepal has consistently remained in the bottom half of the list of countries where corruption is rampant. This is evident from the latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International (TI) on Tuesday. The CPI shows that efforts taken so far to control corruption in Nepal have failed to yield any substantial result.

Corruption, a term as old as politics itself, remains a widespread menace that plagues nations worldwide, impeding their progress and development. Put simply, corruption entails the improper use of public power, frequently for personal gain, leading to violations of fundamental principles such as honesty, integrity, and accountability. This pervasive issue manifests in various forms, including bribery, nepotism, embezzlement, and abuse of authority, and can permeate all levels of government, from the highest ranks to the lowest tiers.

The government's proposal to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2002, by setting the statute of limitation to five years for prosecuting corruption cases has raised concerns among various stakeholders, including Transparency International (TI) Nepal as well as legal and constitutional experts.

KATHMANDU May 10: Transparency International (TI) Nepal has drawn parliament’s attention regarding the amendment bill related to the corruption prevention and Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) that is currently under consideration in parliament..

It's time for the country to move beyond just lip-service and take decisive steps to combat corruption and build a brighter future for all.
