NT switching PSTN to IP network

KATHMANDU, July 9: Nepal Telecom (NT) has started switching PSTN (landline) telephone service to IP-based network. Issuing a statement, the state-owned operator said that Mahendra Man Gurung, secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC) inaugurated the new technology by making a call from the NT's telephone exchange at Gwarko.

Kathmandu is nearer to New Delhi than Dhangadi, the far-western city of Nepal, due to lack of proper connectivity. The remoteness has not only created trade and economic bottlenecks, but also created political gap between Kathmandu and the rest of the country which has, in some way, weakened national unity and sovereignty.
