CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Feb 23:  A private lander on Thursday made the first U.S. touchdown on the moon in more than 50 years, but managed just a weak signal back until flight controllers scrambled to gain better contact.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan became the fifth country in history to reach the moon when one of its spacecrafts without astronauts successfully made a soft landing on the lunar surface early Saturday.

More than 50 years after the last Apollo mission, the United States will try once again to land a craft on the Moon on January 25, said the head of what could be the first private company to successfully touch down on the lunar surface.

The world looked on in awe and admiration as India achieved an extraordinary feat, landing its spacecraft, Chandrayaan-3, on the rugged and unexplored south pole of the moon.
